Place-based Education (PBE) is the process of adapting students’ educational experiences to the places and characteristics of their communities to make learning more “practical, relevant, and meaningful”, and to help them become creators, not just consumers of knowledge. This brief by the Region 19 Comprehensive Center provides an overview of PBE, best practices and examples, a description of PBE initiatives in Hawai‘i, and examples of PBE programs and projects for indigenous students.
