Proficiency-based learning features academic instruction, assessment, grading, and reporting that are based on a student’s demonstration of mastery of knowledge and skills. This brief outlines current best practice as demonstrated by five sites (one charter school and 4 school districts) that are in the process of implementing proficiency-based systems. For each case study, the authors focus on six indicators: Standards-Based Education, Assessment Practices, International and Multicultural Learning, Technology Integration, Transitions, and Data Systems.
