Diversifying the Educator Workforce: A Guide for Minnesota Districts and Schools

Theory of action chart

As of 2021, about 5.6 percent of Minnesota’s teaching force identified as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC), compared to the nearly 36 percent of students in Minnesota’s K-12 classrooms. To help change that ratio, the R10CC offers resources that are useful tools as educators consider ways to recruit and retain a racially diverse teacher workforce in your school or district.

This Guide is designed to help schools and districts begin to understand, select, and, hopefully, implement strategies that will work in their localized context. This guide was informed not only by research literature, but most importantly by educators in Minnesota. The R10CC researchers surveyed leaders statewide, reviewed grant applications, and interviewed program leaders and BIPOC educators served by programs.
